- Effectiveness of Self Instructional Module on Perception of Needs among Family Members of ICU Patients

Background: Critical illness of a member of family who admitted in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will lead other members to a state of tension, fear and anxiety. This will also leads to insufficient fulfillment of their needs. It may include mainly as follows physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual, social and financial needs. Therefore, the investigator felt the need to evaluate the effectiveness of self instructional module on perception of needs among the family members of patients admitted in Intensive Care Units of selected hospital at Mangalore.
Objectives :The present study aims to assess the perception of needs both before and after administration of self instructional module and also to find the association between mean pre-test scores regarding perception of needs among the family members of patients admitted in Intensive care unit and with their selected demographic variables.
Method: A pre experimental, study was conducted among 50 family members of patient admitted in intensive care unit of selected hospital at Mangalore using a perceived needs inventory questionnaire followed by administration of self instructional module on needs among the family members of patients admitted in intensive care units. After a lapse of 7 days, post-test was conducted using the same perceived needs inventory questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: Assessment of the pre-test scores of perception of needs revealed that, that majority of the respondents, 30 (60%) had averagely perceived their needs, followed by 3 (6%) had good perception of needs, while none of them had excellent perception of needs. Whereas, after the administration of self instructional module the perception of needs level had improved, i.e., 30 (60.5%) respondents had good perception needs, followed by 20 (40%) respondents who had excellently perceived their needs. The mean percentage of the pre-test perception of needs score was 46.93% with total mean and standard deviation of 14.08 and 3.116 respectively. However, after the administration of self instructional module, the mean percentage had increased to 79.27%, with total mean and standard deviation of 23.78 and 2.013 respectively. The study findings also revealed there was a significant association between perception of needs score with the selected demographic variable, education. The obtained 't' value [25.57, P<0.05] was higher than the table value indicating the effectiveness of self instructional module.
Interpretation and conclusion: The study findings revealed that the family members are not meeting or perceiving their needs adequately. The self instructional module was found to be effective in making awareness on needs among the family members of patients admitted in ICU. The study findings implied that self instructional module had a vital role in perceiving and meeting the needs among the family members of patients admitted in ICU.

Background: Mobile phone became more and more a necessary tool in our daily life. Many surveys have shown for instance, on an average that adolescents and young adults spend more than an hour on the mobile phone every day. It will indirectly harm them in all the aspects include, psychological, social and academicals. Therefore, the investigator felt the need to assess the knowledge on psychological, social and academicals impact of mobile phone among adolescents in selected nursing college at Udupi district of Karnataka state Objectives: The objectives of the study were to assess the knowledge on impact of mobile phones on adolescents in selected nursing college by structured knowledge questionnaire, find the association between knowledge regarding mobile phone impact and selected variables of the study. Methodology: The study was aimed to assess the knowledge of nursing students regarding impact of mobile phones. The study has adopted descriptive research design and consists of 50 nursing students from both Basic Bsc. Nursing and Diploma in Nursing of selected nursing college at Udupi district, Karnataka state. Non probability purposive sampling technique was used for this study. The content validity of the tool was established by giving to experts. The reliability of the tool was established by using split half method for the knowledge questionnaire. And the value was based on pilot study; the feasibility was assessed and planned for data analysis was finalized. Results and conclusion: The major findings of the study were, majority of the sample (88%) belonged to 18-19 years, majority of samples (90%) are females, majority of samples (60%) are studying in Bsc Nursing, majority of the samples (64%) belongs to rural area, majority of the samples (80%) belonged to Christian religion, majority of the samples (68%) belonged to nuclear family, most of the samples (62%) got information from television/internet. Area wise knowledge shows that 59.5% of the adolescents have more knowledge with mean score of (2.38+0.935) about social impact f mobile phones and 31% mean score (1.24+0.970) have knowledge on psychological impact and only 24% adolescents with the mean scores of (0.48+0.538) have academic impact of mobile phones. here was a significant association between knowledge scores and selected variables.Keywords

A state-of-the-art, indigenously developed, and the world’s first 205 MHz stratosphere–troposphere (ST) wind profiler radar installed at the Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala, with the support of Science Engineering Research Board, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, is introduced in this article. This radar provides a cost-effective and high precision technology capable of monitoring in all weather conditions round the clock. Its primary goal is to understand the characteristics of the Indian summer monsoon at its gateway at Cochin. Brief technical details and the validation of radar data with the colocated GPS radiosonde observations are mentioned. Applications of the ST radar data for various studies of atmospheric, ionospheric and radio astronomical features are discussed. Cochin ST Radar is open to all researchers from national institutes, universities and other academic institutions for conducting regular as well as special experimental campaigns, based on their scientific proposals.Keywords
